GRATITUDE

Gratitude

As we approach this season of Thanksgiving it is important for each of us to understand the importance of gratitude in our lives.  The act of being grateful is not merely a process of reflecting on our past or current circumstances. Gratitude is the whole process of mental adjustment and spiritual tuning that maintains our harmonious relationship with the one and only source that provides everything in our lives.

To properly apply the obligation of gratitude we must first firmly believe that there is one intelligent substance, which I choose to call God, from which all things proceed.  Secondly, we must believe that this source gives you everything you desire. And, thirdly, we must relate to this source with a feeling of deep and profound gratitude.

Many people, who seemingly order their lives rightly in all other ways, are kept in a virtual or literal state of poverty by their lack of gratitude.  Having received wealth, health or any other special gift from God, they cut the wires which connect them to Him by failing to make a proper acknowledgment.

Let’s use the analogy of a child to gain a clearer understanding of this concept.  As parents or grandparents we often provide a toy to a child.  In this case, we are the one whom is the source from which this gift precedes.  If the child expresses sincere gratitude by taking a moment or two to say “Thank you”, we are more apt to continue the practice of extended giving.  If on the other hand, the child focuses on the gift and fails to express gratitude, we feel unappreciated and tend to limit similar gestures in the future.

It should come as no surprise that the nearer we live to the source that provides everything in our lives, the more gifts or blessings we shall receive.  It is also easy to understand that a soul that is always grateful lives in closer touch with God than one who never looks to Him in thankful acknowledgement.

But, the value of gratitude does not consist solely in getting more blessings in the future.  Without gratitude we cannot keep from being displeased with the conditions and circumstances as they are.  The moment that we permit our minds to dwell with displeasure we begin to move backwards into destruction.  The mental images of your displeasure will be transmitted and you will be surrounded by all things inferior.

Take heed of all your blessing every day.  Do not only reflect on the larger gifts but rather search each day for the multitude of pleasurable circumstances that occur.  Be thankful the cup of coffee at the office that you did not have to make, a phone call from a friend, finding a $20 bill in your trouser pockets and so many other things.

I encourage you, in those last few moments before you sleep, to reflect on the little things and give thanks.  It is through this practice that you will develop a grateful heart and sustain your connection with God.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I Don’t Know

I Don’t Know

We all know people or organizations that seem to get stuck at a certain level.  Some seem to be winners, while others lack success.  During the past several years I have committed myself to understanding why and to remove the mystery between the two.

When I ask someone who has achieved a high level of success to clearly articulate why they are successful, the most common response I get is “I Don’t Know”.

Likewise, when I ask the same question to someone that is not achieving success, I get the same response, “I Don’t Know”.

The sad part is that when someone says “they don’t know” they are often telling the truth.

Most people that are not winning in the important areas of their life will make a pretty strong argument that they work just as hard as or even harder than those individuals that are successful.  Often they go on to play the “who is the matter with me” game.  They will complain that their boss doesn’t like them, the teacher is mean, my mom didn’t tell me I was pretty, my dad pushed me too hard….whatever.

Each time I hear someone respond “I Don’t Know” to a question related to an important area of their life I am reminded of a neighbor I had several years ago.  The Johnson’s were a wonderful couple but their six year old son Steven was quite a terror.  The Johnson’s had a tall privacy fence around their back yard and all was well when Steven was confined but you had brace yourself if he ever got out.

Now Steven (Satin as we called him), really wasn’t a bad kid, he just had a special knack for creating trouble.  One morning, while I was having my coffee, I heard a tremendous noise along the side of my house.  I looked out the window to discover that Steven was destroying the flower pots with his dad’s new golf club.

Within a few minutes Mrs. Johnson responded to the emergency and gained control of her son.  I distinctly remember the conversation.  It went something like this:

Mrs. Johnson:        Steven, what are you doing?  You know that is your dad’s new golf club and you broke all my pots.  Why did you do that?

Steven:                  “I Don’t Know!”

Mrs. Johnson:        You know that your father is going to be very upset and I am angry with you for killing my flowers.  You know that you should not have done that.

Steven:                  “I Know!”

Mrs. Johnson:        I am going to have to punish you now.

Steven:                  “I Know”

Mrs. Johnson:        So why did you do it?

Steven:                  “I Don’t Know!”

The story has significance for all of us.  Steven knew that his inappropriate behavior was going to bring him an undesired result but was unable to explain why acted as he did.  Now Steven was just six years so we will cut him a bit of slack…but what about those among us who continue to act in a manner that they know is not producing the desired results in their lives.  What’s worse, they do not know how to change.

The first step in any personal growth process is to have an open mind.  We have to be open to new ideas and understand that change requires change.  Unfortunately, most of us have been conditioned to believe that people resist change.  That is not true.  People do not resist change, they resist being changed.  The good news is that once they make the decision to change for themselves there no holding them back.

What each of us has to do is to accept full responsibility for the results that we are getting in our lives.  All we need to do is look in the mirror.  The only person we need to improve our results is always available for consultation.

What do you want?  Really begin to ask yourself what changes are necessary to get the results that you desire in your life.  Act now!  Don’t wait for the conditions and circumstances to be perfect, they will never be perfect.  Just follow your heart and move in the direction of your dreams.

Use Your Imagination

Our imagination is our ability to build big beautiful pictures. Imagination really is the workshop of the mind.  Thomas Edison carved into his desk that imagination is more important than knowledge.

We are always using our imagination all the time but most people are imagining the worse case scenario in every situation.  “What’s the worse that could happen?”  That is where they focus their energy and that is exactly what they get.  You see, most people have not used their imagination in a productive way since they left the sandbox.

Remember those times when you were playing with your friends and created a big beautiful world.  Those times were so much more important than just “Child’s Play”.  That is where really big ideas began to take root.  Look around your room right now.  Everything that you see; the computer, telephone, desk, television, etc. all started out as an idea in the mind of one individual.  That is how we got into the air, went to the moon, lighted our world, and saved lives through what seems to be miraculous advancements in medicine.

The perception of the day was that none of these things could happen.  But the great people that introduced us to these things allowed purpose to be blended with their perception to over-come what at first appeared to be obstacles.  We have the ability to do the same.

No of us has ever seen an original painting.  At best we see a very well crafted reproduction.  The original only exists within the mind of the artist.  Van Gough said that he would first dream his painting and then paint his dream.  That is the way it is with every new idea.  Everything begins with our imagination.

We have the ability to tap into this tremendous resource.  Within each of us there is an idea simmering just waiting to be expressed.  Our ideas are a seed just like an acorn.  Within the seed is a pattern or plan and once the seed is placed in fertile soil it will begin to attract everything that it needs to grow and flourish.  That is what is meant by the Law of Attraction.

We too have the power to dream big and to bring our dreams from the power of spirit into the physical world.  The idea of this website was brought into the physical world through the efforts of one woman.  Countless lives will be uplifted and changed for the better.  The Law of Attraction will continue to provide all the resources necessary for the growth and allow each of us to make a contribution to the great work ahead.

Dream Big!

THE POWER OF OUR MEMORY

THE POWER OF OUR MEMORY

Most people say that they have a bad memory.  They keep saying that to themselves and it is really no surprise that when they try to remember things they forget.  We can all develop an outstanding memory through practice, ridiculous association and other techniques.  Like any other mental skill, if we invest the time and sufficient effort, we can develop our memory to an astonishing level.

The truth is that we have a perfect memory.  The power of our memory is that we can visualize all of our experiences, good and bad.  When I smell certain foods, I immediately recall my grandmother’s kitchen.  I visualize all of the details.  I see her standing at the old stove wearing a simple cotton apron, the little decorative dishes displayed on the wall over the sink, the red vinyl chairs around the table, and the hum of what she called the “frigidaire ”.  More importantly, I re-feel all her love and how that made me feel warm, safe and special.

Unfortunately most people have an inner judge inside them that reminds them of all their sins, all their transgressions, all their failures.  They focus on those negative experiences and allow guilt and feelings of inadequately build up to such an extent that they conclude that they are unworthy of happiness or success.

Instead of dragging all of that garbage from past into our future; what we really need to do is let it go.  We have all made mistakes, hurt others and disappointed ourselves.  We are human and that is just a part of life. We must understand that we have already paid for those mistakes and there is no reason to pay for them again and again.  We just have to let go.

We have the ability to choose our thoughts and to use the power of our memory to remind us of all of our successes we had in our life.  We need to rekindle the memories of all the times we triumphed and overcame obstacles during trying circumstances.  We need to relive the time when we made the big play in a close game or when we reached out in kindness and really made a difference in someone’s life.

Use your memory to recall the images of the successes you have had in your life and use the feelings associated with them to build your future.

Staying Focused

During my seminars I discuss the concept of will.  Unfortunately, most people confuse “will” with “will power”.  They believe that the “will” is something we force through the application of brute determination.  I assure you that your will has nothing to do with force.  You see, as we push against someone or something physically or emotionally, we guarantee that an equal and opposite force will be generated against us.  In that scenario there are no winners – and we are in the business of winning.

The application of our will is our ability to concentrate and to stay focused on our goal to the exclusion of all outside distractions.  We are not going to let our own negative thoughts or comments from unaware peons detour us from our intended course.  The will is to the mind like a magnifying glass is to the sun.  Anyone who has been to a beach knows that we can lie in the sun and within a few hours get a nice golden tan.  We can also take a small magnifying glass and focus that same energy into a tight bead that can blister the skin in just a few seconds.  Likewise, staying focused, concentrates our efforts.

In her book “Your Invisible Power”, Genevieve Behrend, states that “When your understanding grasps the power to visualize your heart’s desire and you hold it with your will, the holding of it with your will allows you to attract all the things necessary for the fulfillment of that picture through the harmonious laws of vibration and attraction.”  What she is saying is that as we have to build an image in our mind and remain focused on what we truly desire.  In doing so, we begin to attract the conditions and circumstances necessary to reach our goal.

As we focus on opulence, sound health, love, friendship, personal achievement and service to others we begin to broadcast powerful vibrations and tune into similar vibrations released by millions of other positive personalities all over the world.  All things become possible.

How We Look at Things

In the previous section, we discussed that we have six intellectual faculties that we can develop to shape our thinking and improve the results that we are getting in all areas of our lives.

The first of these intellectual faculties is our perception.  Our perception is our ability to see the world and to look at circumstances beyond what they may first appear to be.

In this journey we call life; we are bound to hit a roadblock every now and then.  We can choose to focus on the near side of what appears to be an obstacle or we can use our perception and discover ways to get around it or even use it as an opportunity to get what we want.

Wayne Dyer talks about perception and he says something truly revealing; he states that when we change the way we look at things – the things we look at change.  When we look at obstacles in our lives as opportunities to grow, we no longer get emotionally involved with that which we think we cannot do and we begin to look for possibilities.

We have all been around children when they begin to learn to craw.  At first, they maneuver around the limited confines of a room but they soon venture off to explore the entire house.  Somewhere, usually in the kitchen, they bump into a chair or stool.  At first, they may sit and ponder but soon they seemingly bounce off the obstacle and continue on their quest.  As the child continues to develop her physical skills she begins to climb that chair or stool to reach the cookies on the counter top.

We need to be more like the child we used to be.  We can and must expand our awareness and train ourselves to look beyond adverse circumstances and look for possibilities.  The choice is yours.

Start Thinking About What You Are Thinking About

Start Thinking About What You Are Thinking About

In our Conscious Mind we choose our thoughts. We can choose any thought we want.  We can be in the most wonderful surroundings and focus on those few things that are out of place or we can choose to seek out the silver lining in the most difficult circumstances.

You will never find yourself thinking of all the wonderful things in your life and walk around in a depressed state.  Likewise, you will never see anyone that is focusing on doom and gloom move in a positive direction.

Ultimately the choice of what we think about is ours but in doing so we must realize that our thoughts cause our feelings.  In turn, our feelings dictate our actions and our actions determine our results.  Our thinking causes the results in all areas of our life; our finances, relationships, health, and the spiritual interaction with our creator.

If we want to change or improve the results in our life we are going to have to change our thinking.  We are going to have to become consciously aware of the thoughts that we choose.

It is absolutely critical that we realize that the results that we are getting in our lives are NOT a reflection of our potential.  The results that we are getting in our life are nothing more than a reflection of our thinking up to this time.  Our potential is unlimited and governed solely by the awareness of our thinking.

We are all familiar with our five physical senses; the ability to see, hear, touch, taste and smell.  In fact, most third graders can recite the five senses with ease.  Unfortunately, we have been conditioned at a very early age to develop our thinking from the information that we gather from these senses.  We are taught as a child to; “Watch what your father…..Listen to your older brother…..Do what the others are doing, etc.  Simply put, we are taught to allow our environment to cause our thinking verses letting our thinking determine our environment.

There is a better way.  In his book, “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill introduces us to an intellectual mind.  After a 25 year long study of the most successful people in the world, Hill concludes that the proper development of our intellectual faculties will enable us to create anything in our lives without violating the rights of others.  Now most people are well aware of their five physical senses; however, when asked to list their intellectual faculties they are guessing at best.  This is unfortunate because the proper development and use of our intellectual faculties will enable us to control the way we think and improve the results we are getting in our life.

These intellectual faculties are like “mental muscles” and when we use and strengthen them we gain control of our thoughts and the results we are getting in our life.  In the following weeks I will introduce and discuss our intellectual faculties.  We will learn to understand and harness the power of our Perception, Will, Imagination, Memory, Intuition and Reason.

This will be an exciting journey and it is my deepest honor to share the trail with you.

Warmest regards,
